Note: This Scripture Foundation Discussion was created for the "Becoming Bereans: Church Approval & Distribution" curriculum. It sets the tone for the entire workshop by grounding the practice of careful checking in the example of the Berean believers. If you would like to develop your own devotionals, we recommend reviewing Scripture Foundation Discussion Framework.
Principle: We examine carefully because God's Word deserves our best attention — and because careful examination protects the community.
The purpose of this discussion is to help participants see that careful examination of Scripture is not a sign of doubt — it is a sign of maturity. The Bereans were praised, not criticized, for testing what they heard against what God had said. This sets the foundation for everything the workshop covers: checking, validation, and community testing are all acts of faithful examination. This will be successful if participants can explain why careful checking honors God rather than questioning Him.

Scripture: Acts 17:10-12
Theme: Noble-Minded Examination
Use the contrast between Thessalonica and Berea. In Thessalonica, the people reacted emotionally — some believed, some started a riot. In Berea, the people listened carefully AND examined the Scriptures daily to see if what Paul said was true. The result? "Many of them believed." The point: careful examination leads to deeper, more lasting faith.
