This page shows the steps for preparing a devotional. These devotions help the team grow in faith as they translate the Bible. To learn how to lead devotions in a class or with a group, see the Devotionals for Trainers teachers guide.

Step 1 — Choose the type of devotion you will lead.

There are different kinds for different needs. Three common kinds are:

• Team-Building Devotions
• Topic Devotions
• Deep-Study Devotions (also called exegetical or hermeneutical devotions)

Step 2 — Read the passage you will cover. Make sure you understand it. Pray, and ask God to help you understand His word through the Holy Spirit.

Step 3 — Look for key words and ideas. As you read, find 2–3 words or ideas that carry the main meaning of the passage. These might be:

• Words that repeat — if a word appears more than once, the writer thinks it is important
• Words that surprise you — something you did not expect to see
• Words that carry a big idea — like love, faithfulness, truth, or grace

Write these words down. When you meet with the group, ask:

• "What does this word mean in this passage?"
• "Why do you think the writer used THIS word and not a different one?"
• "Does your language have a word like this? What picture does it paint?"

This step helps translators and teachers look closely at the text and connect God's word to their own language and life.

Step 4 — Write a set of questions. Think about the answers you expect. For example:

• Who wrote it?
• Who was it written to?
• When was it written?
