Training Guide

Duration: 180 minutes (Could be divided into two parts)

Note: This guide is not intended to function as a script. However, at times, ideas will be written out to help facilitators think through the purpose of activities and visuals. Feel free to use those ideas in your training, or feel free to craft your own materials for your context.

Focus of Session: Translators will learn how to determine when they are finished. Special focus will be given to the 5 factors that enable churches to use their translation and and yet improve them over time.

Why this is important to translators: Traditional approaches to Bible translation have a binary perspective - either it is finished or it is not. Church Based Bible Translation does not have consultants determining whether their translation is finished or not. The churches need a way to decide when a translation is usable and yet be able to iteratively improve it. They need a process that gets them to trusted and trustworthy over time like the original Bible translation in English and German.

Prior knowledge: The participants must be familiar with the qualities of a good translation. This may be used as a summary training after checking training or it can be used as an introduction to checking training.

Session Objectives:

Participants will compare the concepts of binary versus iterative. They will plan ways to use their translation while iteratively improving it. They will evaluate and apply the 5 factors to finished to their own translation context and establish a rubric for evaluating their translations.

Outcomes/Measurables:

• Leaders and/or trainers establish a self-prescribed plan to iteratively improve their translation and steward it to trustworthy.

Now that you have watched the video, here are some questions to think about and discuss:

• What did the Tano they do with the translation as it progressed? (possible answer: They taught it to the church and discussed it with the community)
  • Discussion questions:
    • When are your going to make your drafts available to the church and community?
    • How are you going to use them in the church to test them?
    • How are you going to document the results of this testing and report back to the translation team?
• What happened to discourage the translation team? (possible answer: There was opposition to the work and accusations that the church did not have the ability or right to translate the Bible)
  • Discussion questions:
    • Has anyone opposed your translation or accused you of not having the ability to translate the Bible?
    • How have you responded?
    • What do you think a good response would be?
• How did the Mai encourage the Tano? (possible answers: They prayed for them and said that Jesus warned his followers about opposition and persecution. They reminded them about the good work that God was doing and how thankful they were that God was bearing good fruit.)
  • Discussion question: How can you encourage one another when opposition comes?
